Caribbean Property Magazine - Trinidad Painting the Trinidad Scene

With its rich energy resources Trinidad is the most dynamic commercial centre in the Caribbean. A melting-pot of African , Indian and Caribbean cultures it has a wild mix of attributes covering business, sport, music, nature and people. The less attractive side of this economically booming island is its high level of crime, traffic congestion, increasing inflation and very public political squabbles amongst its leaders. All that aside, Trinidad continues to blaze a trail of economic prosperity built on its lucrative oil and gas reserves, but also embracing offshore business, construction and tourism. The government is also committed to improving the island's prosperity over the next decade with its vision 2020 plan to improve public health, education, infrastructure, and housing.

The social side of Trinidad is Carnival and no other islanders party like the Trinis. Nationals return from all over the world for Carnival in February and work virtually comes to a standstill despite the island's strong business ethic. It's just another intriguing paradox to an intriguing island.

Who's Who in Trinidad

The celebrity image of Trinidad is changing as several of its international superstars of the last decade are slowly leaving the scene. The great Ato Bolden is slipping down the ladder of the world's top sprinters, Dwight York has long since left Manchester United and now plies his trade at the less fashionable Sunderland, and the greatest batsman to emerge from the West Indies, the inimitable Brian Charles Lara has retired from test cricket. What a magnificent trio of sporting celebs and although the Soca Warriors did a magnificent job at the 2006 World Cup, even their sporting prowess has evaporated in the life thereafter. On the world stage top golfer Stephen Ames flies the Trinidad flag albeit with some allegiance to his new domicile in Canada.

The buzz in Trinidad real estate

Caribbean Property Magazine - Trinidad Although its tourism industry is not as dominant within its economy as in other Caribbean islands, there has still been a boom in Trinidad real estate in recent times. The impetus has been largely internal as opposed to overseas investors, although some overseas corporate business people have made inroads into the property market.

Many Trinidadians have invested in lifestyle real estate resorts in Tobago in the past five years, but that trend is changing and some developers are moving to provide attractive investment opportunities closer to home.

Trinidad's real estate boom is fundamentally different to the other islands, primarily because it has been fuelled by major projects in commercial real estate, and on the domestic front, providing suitable accommodation to house the influx of personnel entering their ever-expanding commercial sector. Government projects have also added to this construction boom, including public housing projects in urban areas.

Property values have soared in recent times and so has the value of land. However, entering into 2008 there has been evidence of a leveling-off in sales and rentals. The most interesting movement in Trinidad real estate is the increase in lifestyle product, albeit at a slower pace than elsewhere. The Millennium Lakes Golf Resort with its adjoining condominium clusters is a welcome attraction to overseas investors as will be the emerging beachfront properties in the southern part of the island.
